The Artist
I
grew up in a home where creativity was important and part of
the fun. Mother was a painter and taught art. One of my
sisters has been an outstanding professional potter for more
years than she would care for me to mention. Using wood to
create has always been fun for me though my first “carvings”
were bas reliefs in slate. My first formal foray into the
world of woodcarving was in 1993 when I took a weekend
caricature carving class while living in Atlanta. I was
hooked! In the intervening 15 years I have been fortunate
to continue my studies with some of the best carvers in the
country. Whether I am taking or teaching classes, I continue
to learn and enjoy.
Why whimsical? Well, it’s just that I believe that we all
need more humor and more play in our lives.
Collectors have been gracious in providing homes for my
carvings of Santa, elves, wood spirits and characters. I
haven’t told the gnomes that I have been carving some extra
gnome houses which I plan to make available to other
families. Several have already gone.
Though I will try to carve on about anything that isn’t
moving, most of my work is done in northern basswood, red
cedar, and cottonwood bark. I use only hand tools in
creating my carvings. While there are occasional “family
resemblances” each of my works are originals. I use high
quality acrylics and/or wax finishes where appropriate to
preserve the character of each piece.
